Carlisi told the group that Accardo would stay on as consigliere and would have final say, as well as Gus Alex staying head of the connection guys.

He then went on to the first problem: Spilotro, and how things had gone down since he took over Vegas. Mobster and mob enforcer Rocco Infelice said, "Hit him.

It was, at the time, suspected that Spilotro and his brother Michael were called by Carlisi to a meeting at a hunting lodge owned by Aiuppa, Spilotro's former mob boss.

Original reports stated the Spilotros were buried alive after the beating, in an Enos, Indiana cornfield.

According to court testimony, when Tony entered the basement and realized what was about to occur, he asked if he could "say a prayer".

It is possible, as the target of the "hit" was Anthony, that Michael was only killed because he was with him, or that the Outfit had decided from the outset that both brothers had to go to prevent any possible future revenge killings.

No arrests were made until April 25, , when 14 members of the Chicago Outfit including reputed boss James Marcello were indicted for 18 murders, including the Spilotros'.

The suspected murderers included capo Albert Tocco from Chicago Heights, Illinois , who was sentenced to years after his wife Betty testified against him in She said that Tocco was dressed in dirty blue work clothes.

Tocco died at the age of 77 in an Indiana prison on September 21, Another suspect in the murders was Frank "The German" Schweihs , a convicted extortionist and alleged Chicago assassin who was suspected of involvement in several murders including the Spilotros, Allen Dorfman of the Teamster's Pension Fund , and a former girlfriend.

Schweihs was arrested by the FBI on December 22, At the time, he was a fugitive living in a Berea , Kentucky apartment complex.

Schweihs had slipped away before prosecutors were able to arrest him and 13 others, including Marcello. On May 18, , the star witness in the government's case against 14 Chicago mob figures, Nicholas Calabrese , pleaded guilty to taking part in a conspiracy that included 18 murders, including the hits on Anthony and Michael Spilotro.

Under heavy security, Calabrese admitted that he took part in planning or carrying out 14 of the murders, including the Spilotro killings.

He became the key witness against his brother, Frank Calabrese, Sr. Calabrese agreed to testify after the FBI showed him DNA evidence linking him to the murder of fellow hit-man John Fecarotta, who was also allegedly involved in the Spilotro slayings.

In September , Frank Calabrese, Sr. On February 5, , he was sentenced to life in prison for the murders. He is survived by his wife Nancy, his adopted son Vincent, and his remaining brothers.

By the time of his death in , the FBI suspected Spilotro was responsible for at least 22 murders. They were also in debt to Spilotro's old boss, Sam DeStefano.

Their bodies were discovered on May 15, , in the trunk of a car dumped on the Southwest Side of Chicago. Both had been beaten badly and had their throats slit.

From McCarthy's injuries, it seems his head was placed in a vise , popping out his eye, presumably to persuade him to disclose the whereabouts of Miraglia.

Spilotro would later refer to McCarthy as the toughest man he ever met. Spilotro may have been involved in the attempted car bombing murder of Lefty Rosenthal on October 4, Looking forward to the next book.

I would recommend the Target Practice Mystery series to readers who enjoy a good, clean, and cozy mystery. They all receive a text message from Loggin, one of their co-workers and a competitor in the tournament, saying someone is trying to kill him.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Jun 05, Cjg rated it it was amazing. Death in the Casino reminded me of why I fell in love with the Target Practice Mystery series in the first place.

It was full of quick witty humor, the characters I've fallen in love with, and a mystery to solve. And who doesn't love Vegas? I found it was the perfect setting for the latest installment in this series.

This book was a turning point in the series in a lot of ways. I felt like it was the first "non introductory" book within the now 5 book series.

There were relatively few new charact Death in the Casino reminded me of why I fell in love with the Target Practice Mystery series in the first place.

There were relatively few new characters that needed introduced, so instead time could be spent further developing the characters we've grown fond of.

Di and Liam take things one step further with their relationship, a new job is offered to Di, and archery, while still a main theme in this series, is second to the characters this time around.

My biggest complaint about this series is still the fact that each book is simply a short story vs a full length novel. There is so much more I'd love to read, and I hope there are many more books to come!

May 11, Laura rated it it was amazing. This is a great book; this is the fifth book in the Target Practice Mystery series by Nikki Haverstock.

The best one so far. An interesting and engaging series. This one had the best mix of archery details and mystery. I read this series because I enjoy the characters.

The archery is interesting, but not my favorite part of the story. I don't gamble either, but putting the location of the tournament in a casino did add interest to the tale.

Speaking of tales tails , Moo is always a favorite part of the books. Apr 24, Donna rated it it was amazing. If you want a fun murder mystery with a sweet and often silly cast of characters sort of a grown up version of the Scooby Doo gang complete with dog then let me recommend this series.

How can you not love a great dane named Moo? In this adventure one of their own is threatened and Di and Mary have to find out who is behind it and why before another body drops.

Nicky is also worried that Ace will go to Gaggi and tell him about the affair. Even though he hasn't made up his mind, Nicky tells Frankie to start getting ready to have Ace killed, if it comes to that.
